We're living in a time when depending too much on oil for energy needs could prove tricky.

That's why now the research on biofuel has been rerun.

Biofuel can be achieved from almost any organic product, from agriculture wastes to dung, including that of wild animals. Now researchers retake in account algae-based fuels, being helped by the recent advances in genomics and biotechnology.

Algae are a natural oil-producer, offering multiple paths to biofuel. They can easily be genetically engineered to achieve varieties that generate high amounts of oil that can be turned into biocrude and refined into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel; those with less carbon atoms can be processed and fermented to make ethanol.
Algae can be grown on land outworn for other crops and using water unsuitable for agriculture purposes, they do not interfere with food production, and oil-per-acre production can be much higher than for industrial crops like soybeans. And their oil production can be boosted even more.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) decade-long algae-to-fuel project was stopped by a decrease in oil prices in 1996, but currently there is a crisis starting to emerge, as oil deposits are located in countries not so democracy-friendly.

NREL is expected to start up again with algae within the next year. GreenFuel is a company developing systems that employ algae bioreactor technology to convert CO2 from smokestack flue gases to not pollutant, renewable biofuels, like biodiesel, ethanol or methane, while also decreasing toxic emissions.

This technology could be also a hit in limiting CO2 emissions while reusing it in renewable fuels, an economically and without retooling method. Experiments revealed a roughly 80 % CO2 capture rates during daylight hours.

LiveFuels is another company funding and coordinating research on algae-to-biocrude. “We could replace certainly all of our diesel fuel with algal-derived oils, and possibly replace a lot more than that”, said Kathe Andrews-Cramer, technical lead researcher for biofuels and bioenergy at DOE's Sandia National Laboratories.

To top it clear that the use of biodiesel in supplying engines with compression ignition is not a new concept of using vegetable oil as fuel being used since 1900 years. Then were conducted primary research on the consequences and the influences that these fuels can have on engines, but with the development and production of fuel abundance (because of the obvious advantages they present), fuel-based vegetable oils and Animal fats were ignored.

Contemporary problems that mankind has faced especially in the last two decades, linked environmental protection and duplication fuel price increases, have led to the rediscovery fuel-based vegetable oils (biofuels) that can be immediate answers to solve these problems. But in an interesting and specifically, the use of biofuels immediately taken before a study-related consequences and effects on internal combustion engines.
The use of biofuels immediate result and the ease of application of technological methods for obtaining them, the most “complex” issue is resolved to obtain a required minimum productivity of crops to plant oil rentabiliza economic use of biofuels and alternative (partial or total) Supplying internal combustion engines.
Developing future (and present) of theoretical and experimental studies on biofuels has shown that, in addition to validate the results already obtained beneficial about practice, there are negative effects (for example, emission of pollutants on the basis of nitrogen oxides - NOx) which require the need for thorough study of the experimental field of biofuels.
For faithful reproduction of all operational conditions of the engines fuelled by biofuels, attempts are made through stands trial on the basis of a rigorous methodology and a well-defined norms in force. Stands the test of engines fuelled by biofuels have the advantage of enabling the location of a large number of sensors that take the necessary information, analyzed using computer systems.
The main structure of a test stand is shown in Figure 1.

Fig.1. The structure of a stand of experimental tests engines. (1-diesel, 2-injection pump, 3-coupling pump training, 4-pump food; regulator 5-speeds, 6-lever Command cremalierei, 7-battery filters, 8-high-pressure pipeline; 9-injector, 10 back-fuel pipeline, 11-pipeline liquid cooling, 12-reservoir water hydraulic brake, transmission cardanică-13, 14-hydraulic brake, the 15-time interpreter, the interpreter 16-speed, 17-weight brake; 18.19-electrical connectors, 20-block with tanks feed mixed with rapeseed oil and diesel, 21-power reservoirs with mixtures of rapeseed oil, diesel tank-22, 23-food pipeline, 24-ramp to connection, 25-d food pipeline, 26-radiator, 27-purchasing system data)

It should be noted that the results obtained by testing experimental engine with a compression-ignition (diesel) are specific type of engine tried as a series of parameters constructivi and functional specific to each engine (cilindre, injection pressure, stroke injection, fuel flow injected, the type of injectors, type of room burns, etc.). have direct influence on the results obtained. It is recommended that for each type of engine (or at least an engine representative of a wide-functional tipodimensional) be made a specific programme of tests on the stand and operational practice.
However, tests carried out may provide an overview of opportunities for optimum use of power engines with compression ignition biodiesel. | n this vein below are the results of the experimental parameters functional to feed the engine type D-118 (used in the construction of agricultural tractors Romanian) with biofuel-based vegetable oils.
functional main parameters that have been taken into consideration are the consumption zone (CZ), specific fuel consumption (which), when engine (M) and actual power (by).

Fig.2 Changes in fuel consumption zone depending on the type of biodiesel used (vegetable oil rape)

Fig.3 Changes in specific fuel consumption depending on the type of biodiesel used (vegetable oil rape)

Fig.4 Change timing depending on engine type used biodiesel (vegetable oil from rapeseed)

Fig.5 Change effective power depending on the type of biodiesel used (vegetable oil rape)

For the experiments carried out on the same type of engine, but which has been used pure vegetable oil sunflower, functional change the parameters of engine compression ignition is shown in the figure 6.

Fig.6 Change functional parameters of engine D118 to feed sunflower oil (1-work mechanical indicated, 2-average power indicated; average 3-pressure indicated; yield 4-wise, 5-average effective pressure, 6-power effective, 7-effective yield, 8-specific consumption of fuel actually).

Based on the experimental results obtained for engine D 118 (engine common in wheeled agricultural equipment) and study variations of these data presented in the previous figures, we can say that:
– Fuel Classic (diesel) can be successfully replaced with mixed vegetable oil + gas oil (biodiesel) both through the prism of maintaining relative performance engine and the decrease in the price of fuel cost;
– In terms of consumption zone is observed that this increase with the decrease in the percentage of vegetable oil, the best results being obtained for B50 and B20 mixture + 5% methanol. | n similarly can say that for specific fuel consumption, it is more than the use of biodiesel, but in a very close range of approximately 10%;
– The best results on the timing for the engine to obtain the mix B20 + 5% methanol which are nearing the moment powered by diesel engine speed of over 1,600 rot / min respectively for mixed classical B10-B50 is found a decrease;
– The closer the actual values of engine power are obtained for a B10 biodiesel, and for the mixture of vegetable oil + diesel maximum studied finds an actual decrease in power with 10-12%;
– To feed an engine compression ignition fuel based on sunflower is found measured by the experimental results of the main indicators of functional engine (mechanical work and indicated actually indicated an average pressure and effective power indicated, the effective power, performance wise and actually, etc.). that they have lower values of 10-12% compared with the use of diesel as fuel. Specific consumption of fuel actually increased in this case with 28-30%;
– It is said that the use of fuel based on sunflower oil (pure or mixed) offers advantages of supplying engine compression ignition, but in this case should be stressed that it is necessary to achieve changes in the structure and system construction Petrol engine (injector, injection pump, filter system, etc.)..

Biodiesel, as an alternative fuel, boasts a number of benefits, but the biggest benefit is that anyone can make Biodiesel at home. Imagine being able to make your fuel for your vehicle or even power your entire home with the energy you created in your garage? That spells a lot of savings for you.

The process of making Biodiesel is not really that difficult. Making your own Biodiesel is a great idea if you can do it because you get to save more money in the long run when you use home-made Biodiesel.

Supplies to Making Biodiesel

To make a small batch of Biodiesel at home all you need are few supplies. You have to source out actual ingredients to make the Biodiesel alcohol, lye and vegetable oil. You also have to produce some supply requirements for mixing the fuel: empty plastic bottles, duct tape, a blender and measuring cups. Make sure that any inputs for the production of Biodiesel should not be used for any other purpose and never recycle such ingredients for cooking.

Once your supplies are in place, you can start learning the process of making Biodiesel

Hazard Free Procedure

Producing Biodiesel in not a risky business, health wise. Running the risk of inviting fire or explosion is minimal. In fact, the only major area of concern, as far as safety, hurting yourself due to flames. Exercise caution and ensure that the mixture’s temperature is under control.

You will undertake the simple procedure of Biodiesel production which entails blending the inputs, allowing it to settle, breaking up the byproduct and Biodiesel and then purifying the Biodiesel. The whole process can take a few days to a few weeks. That is dependent on the cleanliness level of your vegetable oil.

Low Volume or High Volume

The production of a Biodiesel can be in a small scale or a large scale basis. Using Biodiesel kits is way to go if a few gallons of diesel production is what your expect to achieve at a time. If you are running your lawnmower or other lawn equipment then A Biodiesel kit is ideal. It is practical to use and will not require a considerable level of supplies.

If you are after more production of Biodiesl like for fueling your automobile, you have to invest on a Biodiesel processor. This simplifies the process, so you can increase your level of production. With a processor you will need some more supplies but you also will not have to spend a lot of time making Biodiesel since the processor does most of the work for you.

Biofuel and biodiesel become popular in one or two decade. Before, many people not really aware with the exist of biodiesel or biofuel. But, after the conventional petroleum price goes up day to day, people now make more attention with biodiesel/biofuel. There are many advantages and disadvantages of biofuel or biodiesel to us or for our environment. if we could change the disadvantages of biofuel become advantages to us/environment, that will be a great news for us :).

Here i want to share you a great article which tell you much about the advantages of biodiesel fuel. Steve has write very clear about the advantages of biodiesel, if you want to move from conventional fuel to this alternative fuel, you must read this article first.

The Advantages of Biodiesel
By Steve Symes

Looking closely at biodiesel, we find that its physical and chemical properties are very similar to petroleum based diesel fuel in terms of operation in compression ignition engines (diesel engines). Therefore, biodiesel can be used in diesel engines without expensive alterations to the engine or fuel system.

When it comes to listing the advantages of biodiesel, there are many and advocates say these include low emissions, better scent, and higher lubricity. According to a DOE report, biodiesel has a lower energy content than regular diesel, but performs as well as diesel when mixed with diesel in blends of up to 20 percent.

The possibility of bio-diesel has been around for a long while, but it is only now, as oil appears scarcer and less secure that people are starting to invest in the possibilities which exist for it as an automotive fuel.

As the transport sector is likely to be the fastest growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions for most of this century, and diesel prices climbing steadily, that the advantages of biodiesel are being appreciated by governments around the world.

However, there is as yet no source of biodiesel that is cheap and plentiful enough to meet the potential demand. The advantages of biodiesel are many; it is renewable, domestic, clean and can be based on a variety of vegetable feed stocks. Some early fleet reviews have also indicated long term maintenance reductions, but stay tuned for more on this. The advantages of biodiesel are; it is a renewable fuel, carbon dioxide neutral, low sulphur, non-toxic, biodegradable, produced locally in the UK, and when used it usually reduces emissions. Thus, overall biodiesel offers a range of environmental benefits unrivalled by any other alternative transport fuel.

Most research indicates that the gradual start of combustion which is a feature of biodiesel when used, also helps to decrease NOx emissions. In quantities up to 5 percent, bioethanol fuel can be blended with conventional petroleum fuel without the need for any engine modification. Bioethanol is produced using familiar methods, such as fermentation, and it can be distributed using the same petrol forecourts and transportation systems as before. Since pure biodiesel leaves no deposits of its own, this results in increased engine life. It is estimated that a biodiesel blend of just 1% could increase fuel lubricity by as much as 65% (U.S. source).

If a vehicle uses traditional diesel, the vehicle emits black, stinky smoke. With biodiesel, the smoke becomes very clean indeed. A good example is the US government implemented rules that mandates the use of alternative fuels in federal vehicles. B20 was adopted for use in moat national parks. If biodiesel is used to fuel all transport vehicles, amazingly it has been claimed that smog will become a thing of the past.

You can also make biodiesel from tallow (animal fats), fish oil, seaweed and algae. In fact, it was recently reported that in an extraordinary show of dedication to the project, the skipper, Pete Bethune, underwent liposuction, and the fat (all 100ml) was used to make a small amount of Biodiesel for Earthrace!

Biodiesel can also be made from imported feedstocks, such as palm oil, from around the globe in an effort to further ensure lower cost supply. Overall, the more diversified feedstock source fuel will be more resilient to market swings in feedstock pricing and supply, that could render the standard biodiesel from bio cropping production model non-viable. While soybean oil has provided a good starting point for biodiesel in the United States, it has yield limitations that will hinder biodiesel growth in the future.

Recently a friend who knows that my enthusiasm is great for biodiesel asked me whether I was investing in it. This was the first time I had thought of investing in biodiesel stocks, and although just a short 18 months back I would have thought him pretty crazy. This time I said that he had a point, and since then I have been seriously considering making some investment into that market quite soon.

So, biodiesel is a good fossil fuel substitute as long as done sensibly up to the recommended percentages. By-products created during its manufacture will also provide a whole range of new materials that can easily replace very many not so friendly materials, and leaving coal as a commodity that could be used for other optional safe and useful manufacturing processes that do not pollute our atmosphere.

A real tangible and global win-win solution exists for biodiesel users currently. As far as “tax subsidies” go, developed countries such as European Union members impose heavy diesel taxes whereas biodiesel is generally tax-exempt. This form of subsidy has provided cost advantages to biodiesel suppliers. So, all in all, the picture looks rosy for biodiesel.

Biodiesel has come a long way since its conception in the early 1800s. Before, the known future is just biofuel and there were a lot of people skeptical about it. Now, more and more countries are building up plants to process animal and plant oils into biodiesel. Several countries are also using biodiesel in their diesel blends and this is commonly marketed under the name Premium Diesel. These countries have undergone several historical biodiesel fuel prices.

Biodiesel fuel is a product of mixing plant and animal oils with ethanol or glycerol. It is commonly referred to as FAME—an abbreviation of fatty acid methyl. The process is called transesterification. This is not a complex process since it can be done at home. However, for a large volume of biodiesel fuel, it has to be processed in a plant. This type of fuel can be recycled. As such, its development is highly prioritized so diesel can be produced at lower costs affecting historical biodiesel fuel prices.

Now commonly used in Europe and Asia, historical biodiesel fuel prices dictate that this is very much dependent on the availability of feedstock. This is because biodiesel is made of animal and plant fats. Since people cannot just get fat from animals, it is a challenge where to get the oil from plants. As a result, it has been said that rainforests are being depleted just to give way to farmlands that specifically product plants that are good sources of biodiesel feedstock such as soy.

The primary feedstock of this type of fuel in the United States is soybean. It is common knowledge that the United States has historical biodiesel fuel prices. In Europe, it is rapeseed oil. It was observed that for one gallon of biodiesel oil or fuel produced, we are saving the same one gallon of fuel oil that comes from petroleum.

Biodiesel fuel has been around since 1853. However, it was not fully used commercially until the early millennium. It is credited to E. Duffy and J. Patrick and it was recorded that the very first diesel-propelled machine ran on August 10 of 1893. Thus, the same day was aptly named International Biodiesel Day.

There is this German man named Rudolf Diesel who made an engine that was propelled by peanut oil. This was his experiment on biofuel for machine usage. Although peanut oil is not qualified as a biodiesel fuel because it did not undergo the actual process of making biodiesel fuel, it was viewed as the future of the power of natural feed stock to be used as an alternative to fuel based on petroleum. However, Rudolf was successful in running an engine using this type of biofuel.

Another person who should take the credit for biodiesel is G. Chavanne. It was in 1937 when he received a patent for a process called transesterification. This is the process used for converting feed stock to biodiesel. The blends of biodiesel fuels are marked on the percentage of blends. A 20% blend is called B20. A 30% blend is called B30. The B stands for blend.

Basically, biodiesel is made from animal and plant fats that are then mixed with methyl or ethanol. Glycerol is also used. Called fatty acid methyl or FAME, biodiesel has gains popularity of its practically year in and year out. The number of countries that have heavily invested in this have grown since the 1970s.

People have always heard biodiesel fuels and all that in school and form other fellow truck drivers but few really understand its essence and component. Biodiesel fuel is a kind of diesel that is not made of petroleum. This means that this has natural compounds such as fats and oils. That is why it is also called fatty acid methyl or FAME.

The creation or development of this oil is credited to G. Chavanne in 1937. He was granted a patent for creating a process of transforming vegetable oil into a fuel. This process is known as alcoholysis—a process known today as transesterification. This is called so because biodiesel fuels l is a mono-alcoholic mixture. Vegetable oil and fatty acids are mixed with ethanol, to be specific.

Ideally, the mixture should of biodiesel fuels be made of the vegetable oil and glycerol. Glycerol is also known to many people as glycerine. This is a chemical compound that is made of lipids. It is non-toxic and it is odorless. However, it was preferred by many that ethyl is used instead of glycerol because glycerol is a sugar based alcohol.

Biodiesel is measured in terms of the B Factor. This letter “B” mean blend. If a biodiesel fuels blend is 15%, then the blend is known as B15. If it is 20%, then the biodiesel blend is called B20. This is not ideally used 100% because it will cause complications in the vehicles. This is because biodiesel burns fast. And as such, there is a need to replace filters often.

Before you read about making biodiesel processor steps, its better if we know first what is biodiesel processor?

From a dictionary tell us that biodiesel processor is a combination reaction vessel and still for producing biodiesel from vegetable oil. many people want to try to use biodiesel fuel to their diesel engine but they do not know how to make a biodiesel fuel. Is that complicated to make a biodiesel?

Here you will get a basic step to build a biodiesel processor, the best thing is you could build that in a corner of a garage, using waste vegetable oil as the main ingredient. Read the details of the steps from the article below:

How to Build a Single Tank Biodiesel Processor

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Now, almost everyone has heard of biodiesel, but few know that this environmentally friendly diesel fuel replacement can be made in a corner of a garage, using waste vegetable oil as the main ingredient. One only needs three basic ingredients to make biodiesel: methanol (or ethanol, if you’re a corn lover), oil (new or used), and lye (caustic soda). This article will tell you how to build a simple, straightforward single-tank biodiesel processor out of materials you may be able to round up for free.

 Steps

Here the few common items listed under “Things You’ll Need.”

Assemble the drum.

Cut a large opening (about half the top) in the top of the steel drum. You may also be able to find a drum with the top already removed.

Drill a 1.5-inch hole in the bottom of the drum. You will attach a pipe to it shortly.

Weld the 1.5-diameter pipe in the hole at the bottom of the drum.

Attach the 1.5-inch brass ball valve to the pipe. This is the drain valve. Brass is not necessary, but it offers the greatest durability.

Drill a hole in the side of the drum at the bottom, same size as the heater element. You can find heater elements in old hot water heaters or purchase them at a hardware store.

Fit the heater element properly, making sure it is not touching the side of the drum.

 Wire up the heater element.

Assemble the chemical mixer.

Attach one pulley to the rolled steel rod.

Attach the other pulley to the spindle of the electric motor.

Weld the propeller to the other end of the rolled steel rod. You can use cheap shelf brackets as propellers.

Attach the rod, pulley and propeller assembly to one side of the hinge. This will allow you to be able to move the propeller/mixer when necessary.

Weld a piece of angle iron across the top of the drum. This angle iron (or similar) offers support for the mixing apparatus.

Weld the unattached side of the hinge to the angle iron so the propeller and rod assembly sits in the middle of the drum. The hinge should swing the propeller and rod back and forth.

Mount the electric motor on the side of the drum. You should be able to mount the motor directly to the drum without it tipping the drum (unless your motor is from an old Cadillac or something).

Fit the belt to the pulleys and tighten by wedging a block of wood into the hinge. A tight belt is necessary to mix the biodiesel.

Fashion a simple wooden measuring stick with 10 litre increments. The measurement stick will aid in processing biodiesel.

 Tips

Think of your single tank processor as a large blender. One can easily make a blender batch of biodiesel, and the processor described above is simply a large rendition of a blender.

If you don’t have access to a small motor, there are other options. One can use a drill with a propeller in the chuck to mix the biodiesel. There have even been models of single stage biodiesel processors that mount a bicycle on top of the drum, effectively stirring the biodiesel by mounting the stationary bike and peddling away!

This is just one version of a simple biodiesel processor. You can use other items that you may find cheap or free. The basic idea is that you need a large, durable container, a mixer, and a way to heat the oil while mixing. Use your imagination!

If you don’t know how to weld, you can fashion a container that uses threaded pipe or industrial adhesives.

It is essential to have a leak free container to ensure that the ingredients’ proportions are correct and to keep messy vegetable oil from creating a slick out of your garage.

Consider placing your entire processor on a stand with wheels. This will make your single stage processor portable and adaptable to most any space!

 Warnings

Both ethanol and methanol are highly flammable liquids, and unfavorable conditions may result in flash combustion.

Lye is a caustic ingredient, and contact with skin–especially wet skin—-will result in severe chemical burns.

Research how to correctly and safely process biodiesel before making your first batch.

Make sure that your heating element is never in direct contact with flammable materials. Use the heating element to preheat oil prior to the addition of methanol or ethanol.

Place your processor in a well-ventilated area. The mixed chemicals will result in fumes that can be hazardous to your health. If the processor is going in a garage or outbuilding, make sure to place the processor near a door or a window that will open.

Making biodiesel is addictive. Creating your own single stage processor may make you an oil baron.

 Things You’ll Need

55 gallon drum.

1/2 or 3/4 Hp (small) electric motor. An electric drill will also work.

Two pulleys which produce 250 rpm and a max of 750 rpm at mixer blade. You will not need the pulleys if you use a drill to power the propeller.

A belt for the above.

12 inch rolled steel rod. The rod can also be shorter or longer—it just needs sufficient propellers to mix the contents of the entire drum.

Two steel shelf brackets (for the blade).

1 1/2 inch (38mm) brass ball valve.

A hinge and a spring to act as a belt tension device.

2000-watt electric water heater element. Lesser or greater wattages will simply increase or decrease the time to pre-heat the oil.

A water heater thermostat.

1 1/2 diameter piece of steel pipe 3-5 inches long with male threads on one end.

Assorted tat: angle iron, wood, screws etc.

When i want to read more about global warming, i found an interesting article written by Nicola. He wrote about Global warming Fact or fiction. For you that interested and concern with global warming issue like me, may be this article will useful for you.

So, What is global warming? Is it Fact or Just a Fiction? Nicola will tell you from the article below:

Global Warming - Fact Or Fiction?

By Nicola Bullimore

Some people who have studied global issues would say there was no such thing as global warming and it is all a big hoax. However, others disagree and believe that since the industrial revolution, we are having a negative affect on our environment.

The best place to start is to look at what we have already been led to believe.

The Greenhouse effect is the relationship between the earth and the sun. The sun provides the earth with the heat and energy it needs and the earth releases back that energy into space.

The greenhouse effect comes into play as the gases in the earth trap that energy so that it cannot be released back into space therefore, warming the earths environment.

The greenhouse effect is a natural process and vital to our survival, without it, the earth would be too cold to live in.

Gases such as Methane, Carbon dioxide and water vapour all trap energy from the sun and enable the warming of the earth.

It is commonly known that plants provide Carbon dioxide, but not so commonly known that plants also remove carbon dioxide.

This is because, when a plant dies and is buried into the earth, these plants become fossil fuel which is coal and oil.

When coal and oil is burned, this then removes the carbon dioxide from the air around it.

200 years ago, before machinery was invented and cars filled our streets, global warming wasn’t an issue.

The natural gases which came from the earth would trap energy to warm the earth, however, since the industrial revolution, more gases are being produced, which means more energy is trapped and result is global warming.

Activists and researches cannot agree as to whether or not humans are causing global warming, but I think we can all agree that when something unnatural occurs, it affects the natural.

If we are producing more gases than what is known as natural, then you would expect that this would have an affect on our environment, but whether or not this affect is causing global warming, well, we will have to leave that down to the scientists.

It is said that in the last century the earth has warmed by 1%, although this is not a massive amount, it still could be an unnatural 1% which would have an effect on the earth’s climate.

The truth of the matter is, the earth works in a certain way that even the best scientists in the world cannot fathom it. We can never assume we know it all just as we cannot 100% rely on what we already believe we know as there could be many unknown factors that have not been taken into account.

It is natural to believe that we are having some kind of affect on our environment in comparison to 200 years ago, but is the cause of global warming? I guess we couldn’t say either way, but what we do know is that we need to keep it in mind and do what we can to help our environment.
